It has already become a good tradition for our school to have a Peace Corps volunteer.
The experience of a 4-year cooperation of Monastyrysche secondary school # 5 with the American Peace Corps volunteers has shown a positive result of the influence of representatives of an English-speaking community on the growing interest and increasing motivation to learning English by the students of our school and the schools of the whole district. The surveys held among the students as for the need for volunteer work at the school have shown that live communication in the classroom, out-of-class/school extracurricular activities of Peace Corps volunteers touch upon and cover in different ways crosscultural and communicative interests of the students. The great majority of those questioned emphasize that communication with volunteers enables to learn the language better, have a better estimate on the subject, communicate with people of other countries, understand the songs, cartoons, movies, information on the Internet in English better. A significant percentage of respondents, including parents, consider working with native English speakers as an opportunity to obtain certain status in future, better employment opportunities. This year we are lucky to have a native English speaker from Seattle (USA), Caitlin Coggeshall, who is going to teach English and conduct English clubs within a period of two years. |
